“I think she would stay. I think she’s biding her time, just waiting to approach you.”

“I see,” he said. “Then I guess it’s a good thing I’m getting Brent out of here. God knows he doesn’t need any more trouble.” She felt him lift her and start walking. She also felt when he placed her in the back of his SUV.

“Safe journeys, Mr. McBride. We will check in with you when you return.”

“Thank you.” Those were the last words she heard from them. She heard the car start, felt them moving, and heard John when he said, “They’re not following us, but I’m leaving you in there until we take off.”

“Okay,” she yelled just to let him know she was still okay.

  “I was good wasn’t I, Dad?”

“Yes you were, son. Love the kick there. Although your mother and I would never condone such behavior on a regular basis.”

She loved that he had made a point of calling her Brent’s mother. He really had accepted her back into their lives.

She lay silently in the trunk, until they were on the plane and it had taken off. Then, John opened the top, pushed the clothes around and helped her up.

“Ouch,” she chuckled as he helped her out. “Good thing I’m not too tall,” she joked.

“Mommy,” Brent jumped out of his seat and hugged her and she hugged him back.

“We’re almost to our new home, Brent. We’re almost safe.” John said as he took hold of Lisa’s hand.

“I wonder what my mom will say. Do you think she’ll be able to accept me?”

  “I know she will.”

  “How can you be sure?”

“Because you’re an angel and you came back,” Brent said as if it should be obvious. “God sent you back to us. I didn’t like God when he took you away, but he gave you back. I think he gave you back because I told him I didn’t like him and I wasn’t talking to him again.” Brent nodded assuredly. “He didn’t need you up there. He has enough angels. But I only have one mom.”

Lisa sat down in the seat where Brent had been sitting and she lifted him into her lap. “I’m so happy, John.”

  “So are we.”

She slept for a little while. She was tired of running and of being scared. Now she had a chance to be free and she was at peace. When they landed she became nervous all over again. She could see her mother and stepfather waiting on the airstrip as the captain exited the flight room. He looked shocked. “Miss Lisa?”

“Hi, Gordon. Don’t tell anybody okay? They’ll try to find me and kill me.”

He nodded. “They’d have to go through me first, Miss Lisa. You’ll be safe here.”

She didn’t need to explain to him what had happened. She was sure he could figure out that she was not an angel sent back from heaven. He knew something scientific had happened to bring her back and thankfully he had complete loyalty to her step-father.

“Somebody is going to be so happy to see you. I’m going to lower the steps.” He opened the door and motioned for them to go on out.

Brent ran out first, John took her hand and walked out with her. Her mother was so busy hugging and kissing all over Brent that she hadn’t noticed.

  “Lorana, honey.”

“Not now Rick, I’m lavishing my grandson with grandmotherly love and then I’m going to spank him for getting kicked out of school.”

“Lorana!” Rick said more firmly. “Look.” He pointed.

Lorana looked up and Lisa saw her look of shock. “Hi, mom.”

“The angels sent her back grandma.”

Lorana started sobbing. She held out her arms and Lisa ran into them. They embraced, both crying hard. “Mom. I love you so much.”

“My baby. My sweet baby,” she cried. “How…how is this possible?”

“Brent, go on over to that jeep and get in son,” Rick said. “I’m going to help your father get your things.”

Brent ran off and got into the jeep. Rick hadn’t moved yet. Lisa was sure he was just as curious and wanted to know just as much as Lorana did. “They cloned me. They were going to kill me and I escaped.”

“No human cloning program is even legal. There were so many problems with it that they banned it.”

“I know. It wasn’t just the ethics of it, but the idea that genetically the specimen wouldn’t be structurally sound,” Lisa sighed. “They explained that to me. I was the first to be created as close to perfect as possible. I’m Lisa, Mom. But I’d understand if you can’t love me as Lisa.” She felt tears falling down her cheek.

“You’re my Lisa,” she said. “And I’ll love you any darn way I please. Now if you start trying to tell me I can’t love you I will take you over my knee and spank you.”

  Lisa laughed. “Okay, Mom.”

“As far as I see it, Brent got it right. God sent you back to us—no matter how it happened, you’re home.”

Rick hugged her too before releasing her and letting Lorana embrace her once more.

“Thank you for bringing her back to us John. I’m so glad you came here.”

“I figured we’d all be safe here. I couldn’t bring everything, but I could bring some of Brent’s things and a few of my own. The rest we left behind. I couldn’t risk them finding out.”

“They would have killed us all,” she said.

“Well, you’ll be safe here. This island has the U.S. Navy protection. Nobody gets on or off without clearance. We have to file a flight plan,” she laughed. “But we don’t leave much. Everything we need is here.”

“Then everything we need will be here also,” John said. “I hope you all have room for three more people.”

  “Always,” Rick and Lorana agreed.

They went home, back to the home that they would have forever, leaving everything else behind. Rick was making arrangements to have the house sold, and trying to get possessions shipped to a warehouse. He said they could bring pieces over later, but that he wouldn’t risk having anything shipped now. He didn’t want anybody to send a traitor to their cause by way of a work hand. Lisa didn’t care about the possessions. She had her family and that’s all she wanted; all she needed.

They could have gone public, but they didn’t. She was afraid she would go from running for her life to being stuck in some government lab somewhere. Instead, they all agreed to remain silent, even if that meant Doctor Colino could carry on his work without being caught. They wouldn’t risk losing Lisa all over again, and she wouldn’t risk losing them.

“I’m so happy to be home,” Lisa turned over into John’s arms, resting her cheek on his chest.

“Brent’s happy here too,” he said. “He’s still outside playing.”

“I know. Which means we can play under the covers a little while longer,” she winked and he groaned.

“Baby, I like the way you think.” He leaned in and kissed her. She was his wife, his love, the mother of his child and his home. He would never lose her again.

“Forever and for always,” she said as she wrapped her hand in his.

“Forever and for always,” he agreed. “Let’s seal the deal with some phenomenal sex.”

She laughed heartedly as he set about putting words into action. Life had given her a second chance and she was going to live it as if each day could be her last. No more waiting, procrastinating, putting off until tomorrow…this was her new life, her new home, with the family she would always love.

“John,” she paused as he kissed her neck tenderly.

  “Hmmm?” He moaned.

“They made me exactly the way I was. I can have another baby you know.”

He pulled back and looked into her eyes. “Lisa?”

“You wanted a little girl, remember. We kept putting it off, but I don’t want to put it off anymore. I want to make another baby with you, John. But only if you want to.” She watched the smile tug at his lips and the hint of devilish charm spark in his eyes.

“Good Lord I’m going to have fun making good on that mission. How many can we have?”

“As many as you want…within reason,” she added when she saw that devious twinkle burn brighter. “Maybe two more.”

  “Three.”

“Stop talking, start helping me make a baby,” she pulled his mouth down to hers and kissed him passionately. Their family was about to get even larger than it already was and something in that thought had her heart bursting with pride and happiness. She was safe. She was loved. She was home.
